If you have a customer who is not paying, then they are essentially hanging on to money that is actually yours. Chasing after debt can be stressful if you are a small business owner, and with a third of payments being late for businesses, it’s a common occurrence. If you want to try and fix the issue or if you want to help yourself here, then keep on reading.

Stop the Issue from Happening

One of the first things you need to do is stop the issue from happening in the first place. You need to try and use invoicing software to track the payments you are owed, so you can make sure that you are aware of who owes what. You also need to try and set out clear terms and conditions as to what is going to happen when someone pays late. If you can do this, then you should be able to make sure that the issue doesn’t get worse over time, and that you are reimbursed with interest if someone does pay late. If you can keep things like this in mind, then it will help you a lot, and it will also stop you from going into debt when you’re owed money from people who aren’t paying.

Stop the Supply

Another thing you can do is try and stop the supply of goods or services to the customer who is paying late. If a customer persistently pays late or if they are making excuses all the time, then you need to take the time to check them out and make sure that you are aware of the risk that’s involved with dealing with them. You should always be polite, and you should always be persistent as well, if you can.  It doesn’t matter how much you plan and how insistent you are, as some customers will still refuse to pay you on time. This can result in major issues, and it’s not something you really want to get involved with. Sometimes, stopping the supply, even if you end up at a loss, is the best thing you can do here.

Recovering Money

If you want to recover money for your business, then you need to take the right steps. It may be that you try and go through a debt collection agency or that you seek legal advice. If you owe a considerable amount of money, then sometimes this can be the way you need to go about things. While you are doing this, it’s a good idea for you to try and make sure that you are not overlooking how important it is to get legal advice, and for you to make sure that you are not overlooking small things in your contract that could make a big difference. Have a lawyer look over your terms and also make sure that you are creating ironclad agreements if you are extending finance to your customers, as this can often stop the issue from happening in the first place.
