Building a business is all about making sure everyone is pulling in the same direction and giving it their best, just like building a winning team. If we take the world of dental care as an example, we see that there is so much more to it than simply going through the motions. Yes, many of the tasks are routine and performed on a daily basis, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be continually optimised with the right upgrades and improvements.

In this quick guide, we’re going to take a closer look at how dental practice managers can make optimal use of dental equipment upgrades to achieve more than ever before.

Upgrading digital diagnostics and imaging

Diagnostics and imaging are what allow dental care professionals to make the right decisions regarding procedures and treatment pathways. New developments such as digital radiography and intraoral scanners allow dentists to see accurate 3D images and enhance images of issues below the gum line, all while reducing radiation exposure compared to traditional X-ray systems. The point is that without upgrading, a clinic will remain static in a world in which better solutions are continually entering the market. This is simply not a good strategy when the goal always has to be to maximise positive patient outcomes.

Patient care can also be greatly improved by being able to give each patient a much clearer idea of specifically what the dentist is trying to highlight. For this reason, it is now common practice to see intraoral cameras used so that dentists can show patients key features in real time. This then improves communication, streamlines decision-making processes, and ensures that the patient is always as informed as possible. In addition, AI-powered software solutions are now making it easier than ever before to detect early-stage issues, such as bone loss, decay, and even oral cancer.

Upgrading restorative technologies

Same-day, minimally invasive treatments allow more patients than ever before to get what they need without delay, making sure that simple problems are never put off for another day. Solutions include 3D printing systems and CAD/CAM systems that are increasingly being used to create personalised crowns, bridges, and other forms of dental prosthetics in-house. Because everything can be done without a third-party fabrication facility becoming involved, the process is faster, more streamlined, and includes fewer potential points of failure due to miscommunication.

Laser dentistry is another key area of development in recent years, with a growing number of practices now carrying out procedures that address both soft tissue and hard tissue issues. The result is a far more precise level of intervention that leads to much shorter healing times and lower levels of discomfort. Even handpieces have been continually upgraded and improved in recent years, as have tools like the apex locator that practices can source from specialist nationwide suppliers of dental equipment.

Upgrading to deliver operational enhancement

The way the practice operates isn’t solely dictated by the imaging systems and handpieces that the dentists have available to them. We also need to consider the impact of supporting software that manages scheduling, billing, and repeat ordering of consumables like PPE and dental materials. Such systems should also be fully integrated and aligned with automated maintenance alerts that allow practice managers to schedule routine maintenance of complex systems so that it has minimal impact on the operation of the practice.

Studies have also shown that practices that prioritise comfort for patients and staff on every level through the science of ergonomics consistently deliver higher levels of positive results. Adjustable dental chairs, stools, and seats in the waiting area all make a difference and contribute to an environment in which everything has a purpose and a clearly defined function.

Small touches like soft colours, suitably relaxing background music, and a welcoming atmosphere in the waiting area can all make a difference. By focusing on how to put as many nervous and anxious patients at ease as possible, the front office team can help streamline subsequent treatments and appointments with the dental care professionals. It’s doing all of these little things on a consistent basis that makes all the difference when you want the practice to function like a well-drilled team.

Final thoughts

By fully committing to the process of continually improving and upgrading every element of the practice, practice managers and their teams are able to consistently optimise for positive patient outcomes. Not only is this essential to ensure the right and proper level of care is received by every patient at all times, but it also makes sure that the practice becomes a viable long-term business. Exactly what’s needed for the team to achieve their aims and make a real difference in the heart of the local community. UtdPlug
