Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday 31 October 2026 knowing that something has to change. Michael Carrick’s side are winless in eight matches in all competitions and sit 16th in the Premier League, and a trip to face Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea is just about the hardest place to go looking for a response. Here is our full Chelsea vs Man Utd preview, with team news, a predicted lineup, the head-to-head picture and our prediction.

The Story So Far
United’s 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth last weekend summed up a miserable month. Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scored in five first-half minutes at Old Trafford, Evanilson added a third after the break, and United — who left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench — were booed off. With one win, four draws and three defeats from eight league games, United have seven points, their lowest total at this stage of a league season since 1986-87.
Chelsea’s season has been almost the opposite problem: plenty of goals, not enough control. Alonso’s team have scored 17 league goals but conceded 15, and they sit fifth with 13 points. Their recent league results tell the story: a 5-1 demolition of Bournemouth and a 2-0 win at Everton, followed by a 0-2 home defeat by Tottenham last Saturday in which Cole Palmer was sent off. Before United, Chelsea also have an EFL Cup trip to Liverpool on Wednesday 28 October to get through.
Team News: Manchester United
United’s treatment room is the biggest talking point of this Chelsea vs Man Utd preview. Based on the latest reports, the following players are expected to miss the trip to Stamford Bridge:
- Marcus Rashford — hip problem, no clear return date
- Luke Shaw — knock, expected to be out longer than first hoped
- Patrick Dorgu — hamstring injury picked up on international duty; out for a number of weeks
- Benjamin Sesko — shin injury; has missed the last three league games and Carrick has set no return date
- Manuel Ugarte — ligament injury suffered at the World Cup; not expected back until 2027
There is one piece of possible good news: Kobbie Mainoo, who has missed the last four games with a muscle problem, was rated at “10 days or so” by Carrick in mid-October, which puts him in contention for a place in the squad at Chelsea — Friday’s press conference will confirm it.
The other big selection question is Bruno Fernandes. United’s captain started on the bench against Bournemouth; leaving him out again at Stamford Bridge, with pressure building on Carrick, would be a huge call.
Team News: Chelsea
Chelsea will be without Cole Palmer for their EFL Cup tie at Liverpool on Wednesday — but crucially for this match, Palmer will be available against United. His two yellow cards against Tottenham brought a one-match ban, and because red-card suspensions apply across domestic competitions, he serves it in the cup rather than in the league.
Against Tottenham, Chelsea were missing Reece James, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, Emmanuel Emegha, Pep Chavarria and Jamie Gittens. Emegha has been reported close to a return, with the United game one of his possible comeback dates. Even so, Alonso can still call on Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro — the attacking group United’s defence must handle.
Head-to-Head
United have had the better of this fixture recently: they won both Premier League meetings with Chelsea last season, including the match at Stamford Bridge in April. Chelsea, however, look a different side under Alonso, and their home games have been full of goals this season — four scored against Brighton and five against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge already. United’s recent record in this fixture is their main reason for hope; their current form is not.
Man Utd Predicted Lineup vs Chelsea
This is our prediction, not the confirmed team — the official lineup is announced one hour before kick-off, and Carrick’s Friday press conference may change the picture.
Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Senne Lammens; Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez; Diogo Dalot, Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans, Amad Diallo; Bruno Fernandes (c), Matheus Cunha; Bryan Mbeumo.
That shape is based on the side Carrick picked at Leeds, with Fernandes restored after his bench role against Bournemouth. If Martinez is not passed fit, Ayden Heaven — who started against Bournemouth — is the natural alternative in the back three. Mainoo, if fit, is most likely to appear from the bench, and Andrey Santos and Joshua Zirkzee give Carrick options to change the game late on.
Key Battles
- Cole Palmer vs United’s left side: with Shaw and Dorgu both out, United’s left flank is patched up — exactly the area Palmer likes to drift into.
- Fernandes and Cunha between the lines: Chelsea have conceded in most of their home games; if United’s creators get time on the ball, chances will come.
- Set pieces: United conceded the opener against Bournemouth from a free-kick situation. Chelsea will have noticed.
Prediction
United’s need is greater, but form and availability point the other way. Chelsea’s attack at home has been relentless, while United’s defence is low on confidence and missing first-choice options. Carrick’s side should score — Chelsea rarely keep teams out at Stamford Bridge — but one goal may not be enough.
Our prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United.
