OPINION: Michael Carrick has credit in the bank at Old Trafford that most managers never get — but seven points from eight league games, United’s worst start since 1986-87, means the questions are now legitimate. Here are the three problems he must fix first.
1. A Defence That Cannot Keep a Clean Sheet
United went through the opening stretch of the season — eight matches across competitions at one point — without a single clean sheet. The back three was supposed to add security; instead it has often added confusion, with wing-backs caught high and centre-backs dragged wide. Injuries have not helped, as our Man Utd injury news page shows, but structure is a coaching issue, and this one is Carrick’s to solve. Even mid-table defensive numbers would transform United’s season.
2. The Broken Left Side
Everything at United currently flows right. With Shaw unreliable and Dorgu injured, the left wing-back position has been a patchwork, and opponents know it — they overload United’s left and dare them to attack down it. Until January’s business — our January transfer targets list covers the Raum-led shortlist — Carrick needs a tactical answer, even an ugly one, because every opponent has spotted the same weakness.
3. Home Form and Game Management
Old Trafford has watched too many leads slip and too many flat second halves. The 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, with the captain benched, was the low point. A young team low on confidence needs simpler instructions in the final half hour: when to press, when to sit, who takes responsibility. That clarity comes from the training ground and the touchline.
The Verdict
None of this requires a new manager, a new formation or a new squad — it requires the basics of the job done relentlessly well. Carrick the player was famous for quiet control. Carrick the manager now needs to impose exactly that on a team that has looked anything but controlled.
