It is the argument that never ends in pubs and group chats, so here is the simple answer, competition by competition: Manchester United have won 47 major trophies — more league titles than any other English club — plus 21 Community Shields.
League Titles: 20
United’s 20 English league titles are a record. Seven came before the Premier League era, including three under Sir Matt Busby, and 13 arrived under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1993 and 2013 — the last of them in Ferguson’s final season. No manager in English football history has won more.
FA Cups: 13
Thirteen FA Cup wins put United second on the all-time list. The first came in 1909; the most famous include the 1977 win that stopped Liverpool’s treble, the 1990 win that saved Ferguson’s job, and the 2024 final victory over Manchester City.
League Cups: 6
Six League Cups, the first in 1992 — the last major domestic trophy of the pre-Premier League era — and the most recent in 2023 under Erik ten Hag.
European Trophies: 6
Three European Cups / Champions Leagues (1968, 1999, 2008), the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991, the Europa League in 2017 — which completed the full set of major European trophies — and the European Super Cup in 1991. The 1999 win was the final piece of the Treble, still the only one achieved by an English club.
World Titles: 2
The Intercontinental Cup in 1999 and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008 make United the only English club to have been crowned world champions twice in the tournament’s two formats.
The Total
Add them up: 20 + 13 + 6 + 6 + 2 = 47 major trophies, with 21 Community Shields (some shared) on top. You can see the greatest prizes up close on the stadium tour and museum guide we have covered — and the hunt for number 48 continues in this season’s full fixture list.
