The January transfer window is still two months away, but Manchester United’s needs are already obvious. A squad sitting 16th in the Premier League, stretched by injuries and short in two key positions, cannot wait until the summer. Here are the positions United must fix in January 2027 — and the names reports are linking with Old Trafford. As always on UtdPlug, names below are reported targets, not confirmed deals: nothing is done until the club announces it.
Priority One: A Left-Back
This is the emergency position. Luke Shaw is injured again, Patrick Dorgu is out for weeks with a hamstring injury (see our injury news page for the full list), and Michael Carrick has been patching the left side of his defence for a month. Reports say a left-back is United’s number one January priority, with RB Leipzig’s David Raum the name mentioned most strongly. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert and Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri have also been linked in reports — all four are Premier League-proven or Bundesliga-tested, all four would walk straight into Carrick’s team.
Priority Two: A Centre-Back
United’s defensive record tells its own story: 13 league goals conceded in eight games and not a single clean sheet in their last eight matches in all competitions. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez are all in the final year of their contracts, and injuries keep breaking up every partnership Carrick tries. A January centre-back — even a short-term, experienced option — would bring stability while the contract situations are sorted out.
Priority Three: A Striker
Benjamin Sesko’s shin injury has exposed how thin United are up front. Joshua Zirkzee has filled in, but reports continue to link United with Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, whose contract situation makes him one of the most watched forwards in the league. If Sesko’s recovery drags on, expect this link to get louder in December.
Who Could Leave?
January is about exits as well as arrivals. Zirkzee has been mentioned in reports as a possible departure if a striker arrives, and United must also make decisions on the players entering their final contract months. With Manuel Ugarte out until 2027, midfield is one area where United cannot afford to lose anyone.
The Bottom Line
United spent the summer of 2026 rebuilding their midfield with Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. January 2027 has to be about the defence and the front line. One left-back, one centre-back and — if the right deal appears — one striker would transform Carrick’s options for the second half of the season.
