Behind the January window talk, a quieter deadline is approaching at Old Trafford: three senior defenders are in the final year of their contracts, and by January all three can speak to foreign clubs about a free transfer. Here are the decisions, player by player.
Harry Maguire
Maguire’s United career has survived things that would have finished most players, and he is still starting games in the back three this season. His case: experience, aerial dominance and a dressing-room presence Carrick trusts. The case against a long new deal: his age and wages. A short extension on reduced terms looks the sensible middle path — but United must decide before January or risk losing a useful squad player for nothing.
Luke Shaw
Shaw is the most talented left-back at the club and, too often, the least available. His situation is tracked closely on our Man Utd injury news page, because his fitness record is the whole argument. If United sign a first-choice left-back in January — see our January transfer targets list — Shaw’s future may be as high-class cover. A new contract only makes sense if the medical picture improves; sentiment cannot be part of the calculation.
Lisandro Martinez
Martinez is the easiest decision of the three — in ability. The Butcher is a starter in Carrick’s back three whenever fit, sets the team’s aggression and is adored by the supporters. The complication is the same as Shaw’s: availability. Expect the club to prioritise his renewal above the other two, with a deal that protects them if the injuries return.
Why It Matters Now
From 1 January, all three can sign pre-contracts abroad. United’s defence could lose a third of its senior depth for free in one summer — or tie down the wrong players for too long. These three decisions will shape the next two transfer windows as much as any new signing.
