Michael Carrick has some huge selection calls to make before Manchester United face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 31 October 2026. Our Chelsea vs Man Utd preview covered the match in detail — here we focus on one question: who starts? This is our Man Utd predicted lineup vs Chelsea, based on the latest team news.
The Big Decisions
Bruno Fernandes: United’s captain was left on the bench for the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth, a decision that dominated the fallout from that match. Away at Chelsea, with United winless in eight, leaving out his best creator again would be an enormous gamble. We expect Fernandes to return as captain.
Kobbie Mainoo: The midfielder has missed four games with a muscle problem, but Carrick’s mid-October timeline (“10 days or so”) points to a possible return this weekend. A start after four weeks out may be a risk — a place on the bench looks more likely.
The left side of defence: With Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu both injured, Carrick has to improvise again. Diogo Dalot has the versatility to play there, with the back three shielding the problem area.
Up front: Benjamin Sesko (shin) remains out and Marcus Rashford (hip) is not expected back, so the front line picks itself around Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and a returning Fernandes, with Joshua Zirkzee an option to lead the line.
Man Utd Predicted Lineup vs Chelsea (3-4-2-1)
Goalkeeper: Senne Lammens
Defence: Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez
Midfield: Diogo Dalot, Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans, Amad Diallo
Attacking midfield: Bruno Fernandes (c), Matheus Cunha
Striker: Bryan Mbeumo
If Lisandro Martinez is not passed fully fit, Ayden Heaven — who started against Bournemouth — is the natural replacement in the back three. Andrey Santos and a returning Mainoo give Carrick midfield options from the bench, and Zirkzee can change the shape if United are chasing the game.
Why This Shape?
The back three protects United’s patched-up left side and gives Dalot and Amad licence to attack down the flanks. In midfield, Baleba’s energy and Tielemans’ passing are Carrick’s best combination while Mainoo works his way back. Ahead of them, everything runs through Fernandes: United’s best performances this season have come when their captain has runners around him, and Mbeumo’s pace in behind is their biggest counter-attacking threat against a Chelsea side that defends with a high line.
The Opposition Threat
Chelsea’s danger is no secret. Cole Palmer is available (his suspension was served in the EFL Cup), and with Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro around him, Xabi Alonso’s side have scored 17 league goals this season. United’s wing-backs will decide this game: pinned back, Chelsea will camp in United’s half; brave enough to get forward, and there is space behind Chelsea’s defence, which has conceded 15 goals.
The confirmed lineup is announced one hour before kick-off (12:30 UK time). Check our full fixture list for everything that follows for United, including Roma in the Champions League on 3 November.
