Manchester United’s winless run stretched to nine games as a promising first half at Stamford Bridge collapsed into a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea. United had the better of the opening 45 minutes — Bruno Fernandes missed a sitter, Amad Diallo missed chances and Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside — but Morgan Rogers ran straight through them five minutes after the restart, and Lisandro Martinez’s red card and the penalty it conceded within a minute of each other ended the contest. Cole Palmer converted from the spot to make it 2-0, and ten-man United never looked like getting back into it. Here is how every Red rated.
Player Ratings: The Starters
Senne Lammens — 5/10: Nearly saved Palmer’s penalty and made a late stop on Estevao, but he was beaten for both goals and looked shaky at times.
Leny Yoro — 6/10: Hung in there out of position at right-back and was arguably United’s best defender on a bad day at the back.
Harry Maguire — 4/10: Stood off Rogers for the opener and was part of a defence that simply watched him run through; a couple of blocks aside, a poor night.
Lisandro Martinez — 2/10: A disaster of a night. Poor on the Rogers goal, then a reckless elbow on Wesley Fofana earned him a second yellow card, a red, and gave away the penalty that made it 2-0.
Diogo Dalot — 4/10: Offered something going forward in the first half but could not handle Estevao after the break.
Carlos Baleba — 5/10: Solid and tidy in the first half, then tired and was partly at fault for the space Rogers exploited.
Andrey Santos — 5/10: Opinions were split on the midfielder — confident on the ball for long spells, but one awful sliding tackle let Rogers through for the opening goal.
Amad Diallo — 6/10: Electric in the first half and the one United player who can come out with real credit, but his missed chances are why this mark is not higher.
Bruno Fernandes — 5/10: Missed the early sitter from Mbeumo’s cross, gave the ball away in dangerous areas and faded once Chelsea went ahead.
Matheus Cunha — 5/10: Bright in the first half and unlucky to have a close-range header ruled out for a marginal offside, then faded badly after the break.
Bryan Mbeumo — 6/10: Worked hard as ever, set up Fernandes’s big chance and was unlucky to hit the bar late, but his first touch let him down in the final third.
Player Ratings: The Substitutes
Kobbie Mainoo — 5/10: Just OK on his return from injury; helped settle things briefly when United were rocking.
Mason Mount — 4/10: No impact after replacing Cunha in the 65th minute, on a night he was booed throughout by the home crowd.
Ayden Heaven — 5/10: Did okay trying to stop Chelsea’s attack slicing United open late on.
Joshua Zirkzee — 5/10: Made things happen and had a shot saved by Mike Penders.
