Alongside the left-back search, Manchester United’s January planning keeps coming back to one name up front: Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. Reports have linked United with the French striker as they look for a reliable centre-forward. Here is why the link exists — and what would make a deal hard.
Why United Are Looking
The full context is in our Sesko story: United’s first-choice striker has had another stop-start season, and the squad lacks a proven, physical alternative who can hold the ball up and finish inside the box. Carrick’s system asks a lot of its number nine, and the bench has not provided enough.
The Player
Mateta has been one of the Premier League’s most effective penalty-box strikers in recent seasons. He is strong with his back to goal, attacks crosses with real aggression and presses with more energy than most forwards his size. Crucially, he is Premier League-proven — there is no adaptation gamble, which matters in a January window.
The Obstacles
Palace have no reason to sell their main striker midway through a season, and his importance to them makes any fee substantial. Mateta has also, at times, been linked with a new contract in south London, and United would face the usual January premium. This is a link that makes football sense and financial difficulty in equal measure.
Where It Ranks
On our January transfer targets list, a striker sits behind left-back in priority — but if a forward leaves Old Trafford in January, the Mateta conversation could become very real, very quickly. For now it is a reported link to watch rather than a deal in motion.
