Manchester United have broken the British transfer record more times than any other club — and the list of their most expensive signings is a history of the modern club, triumphs and warnings included. Fees below are the widely reported figures at the time each deal was done.
1. Paul Pogba — £89m (2016)
A world-record fee brought Pogba back from Juventus four years after he left for almost nothing. His second United spell delivered trophies and endless debate in equal measure, and he left on a free transfer in 2022. The most United transfer of all time, in every sense.
2. Antony — £86m (2022)
Erik ten Hag’s headline signing from Ajax remains the cautionary tale: a fee that demanded a superstar and a player who never carried its weight. His struggles defined the risks of paying for potential at the very top of the market.
3. Harry Maguire — £80m (2019)
A world record for a defender. Maguire’s United career has been a rollercoaster — captaincy, criticism, and a late-career renaissance that has earned him genuine respect.
4. Romelu Lukaku — £75m (2017)
Signed to be the line-leading striker of the Mourinho era; scored regularly, never quite fitted, and was sold to Inter two years later.
5. Jadon Sancho — £73m (2021)
The long-chased winger from Borussia Dortmund whose United career became one of the great what-ifs of the modern era.
The Rest of the Top Ten
Casemiro (reported £70m with add-ons, 2022) brought instant authority to midfield; Rasmus Hojlund (£64m plus add-ons, 2023) was the striker bet of his window; Angel Di Maria (£59.7m, 2014) dazzled briefly and left within a year; Bruno Fernandes (£47m rising to a reported £67.6m, 2020) is by a distance the best value on this entire list; and Benjamin Sesko (£66m plus add-ons, 2025) is the current record-era striker whose full story we have told in our Sesko story.
The Lesson
The list proves money was never United’s problem — judgement was. The club’s next record-chasing window is already being planned; our January transfer targets list tracks the names being linked now.
