One position, four reported names. Manchester United’s January left-back search has been linked with David Raum, Lewis Hall, Adrien Truffert and Rayan Ait-Nouri — here is how they rank on fit for Carrick’s 3-4-2-1, readiness and realism. All four feature on our January transfer targets list; this is the detailed comparison.
1. David Raum (RB Leipzig)
The complete package for the role: elite crossing, set pieces, an engine for the whole flank and Champions League experience. Our full David Raum profile makes the case in depth. The only question is Leipzig’s price in January — he is first choice because he improves the team the day he arrives.
2. Lewis Hall (Newcastle)
The Premier League-proven option. Hall’s technical quality and comfort stepping into midfield suit possession football, and he is young enough to hold the position for years. Newcastle’s reluctance to sell to a rival — mid-season, at any price — is the problem.
3. Adrien Truffert (Bournemouth)
The value pick. Truffert has adapted well to English football, defends his flank honestly and delivers a good cross. He would not arrive as a star, but as a reliable starter who lets the system breathe — sometimes that is exactly what a broken position needs.
4. Rayan Ait-Nouri (Manchester City)
The wildcard. Ait-Nouri’s dribbling from deep is the best on this list, and he knows the league — but he only moved to City recently, and prising a player from across town in January is the least realistic deal here. A name for the summer list more than this window.
Verdict
Raum if the money works, Hall if Newcastle blink, Truffert as the smart fallback. What United cannot do is finish January with the position still patched — the whole season has shown why.
