Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford and end their nine-game winless run, in a Champions League night that looked lost at half-time. Matias Soule and a Donyell Malen penalty had Roma in complete control, but Bruno Fernandes’s retaken penalty gave United a route back, and Matheus Cunha scored twice in three late minutes to turn it around — before being sent off in stoppage time. Here is how every Red rated.
Player Ratings
Senne Lammens — 5: Made important saves late in the first half to stop Roma going further ahead, but beaten at his near post for the opener and could do little about the penalty.
Leny Yoro — 6: One of the more reliable defenders on the night, with a last-ditch tackle to prevent a certain goal, and still willing to bomb forward.
Harry Maguire — 4: Part of a back line that left huge spaces in the first half and improved after the break.
Ayden Heaven — 4: A difficult night for the young defender — caught out several times and his handball gave away the penalty that made it 2-0, though he was left exposed by those around him.
Diogo Dalot — 3: Left Soule completely unmarked for the opener and was caught out of position again in the build-up to the penalty; the lowest outfield mark of the night.
Carlos Baleba — 5: Battled in midfield but could not impose control in the first half, then went off injured early in the second half.
Kobbie Mainoo — 6: Composed in possession and grew into the game as United took charge after the break, after a difficult first half.
Amad Diallo — 4: The effort was there but almost nothing came off for him down the right, and he was replaced by Lacey on 75 minutes.
Bruno Fernandes — 7: Quiet and booked in the first half, but scored the retaken penalty that started the comeback and delivered the cross for Cunha’s equaliser.
Matheus Cunha — 9: Won the penalty, then scored twice in three minutes to win it — a match-winning second half, soured only by the stoppage-time sending-off.
Bryan Mbeumo — 6: Worked hard, came desperately close with an effort that struck both posts after the penalty, but his final touch let him down.
Substitutes
Youri Tielemans — 7: On at 51 minutes for the injured Baleba, he brought composure and tempo to midfield and was one of the key factors behind the comeback.
Shea Lacey — 8: An outstanding cameo — direct and fearless from the moment he came on at 75 minutes, and his pass set up Cunha’s winner.
Lisandro Martinez — 6: Steady defensive help in the closing stages, including after Cunha’s dismissal, after coming on for Heaven on 75 minutes.
Mason Mount — 5: On for Fernandes at 88 minutes with little time to influence the game, but helped United hold their shape.
Matthijs de Ligt — 5: On for Maguire at 88 minutes to add defensive presence for the tense finish; too little time for more.
What It Means Now
A first win in nine, and a result that keeps United’s European campaign alive — United now sit 17th in the league-phase table with six points from four games. But a first half that bad cannot be repeated against stronger opposition, with Aston Villa next at Old Trafford on Sunday.
